Most first-time air fryer guides make the process sound more complicated than it is. Your new appliance does not need an elaborate setup. It needs a clean basket, a clear air vent and a small first batch that helps you understand how quickly it cooks.
Wash the removable parts, dry them properly and check the manual for any model-specific first-use instruction. Then cook a handful of frozen fries or nuggets at 180°C, checking and shaking them halfway through. That one test will teach you more about your machine than blindly trying every preset on the display.
The important part is knowing that not every model behaves identically. A compact basket fryer cooks differently from a large dual-zone unit, and an air fryer oven needs a little more tray management. Once that difference is clear, learning how to use an air fryer becomes straightforward.
Start by Identifying Your Air Fryer Type
A regular basket model has one pull-out drawer. It is the simplest design for fries, samosas, nuggets, kebabs, chicken and reheating leftovers.
A dual-zone model has two separate baskets. Each side can cook at a different temperature, which is useful when chicken and fries need to finish together. The controls take an extra minute to understand because you must select the correct zone before changing its settings.
An oven-style fryer uses shelves, trays or rotisserie accessories. It gives you more usable space, but food on the upper shelf may brown sooner because it sits closer to the heating element. Rotating the trays usually gives a more even result.
This distinction matters more than the brand name printed on the front.
Air Fryer Brands and Models Available in Pakistan
Pakistan’s air fryer market is no longer limited to Philips and Anex. There are simpler budget models, large family-size baskets, touchscreen machines and dual-zone options from several brands.
The table below covers the relevant brands and models listed in the Powerhouse Express air fryer collection. Prices and stock are not included because both can change. The linked product page should be treated as the current reference.

Brand |
Air fryer models |
What separates them |
|
Philips |
The range moves from a compact basket to a family-size XL model. Philips is useful for buyers who want a familiar control system and widely documented cooking guidance. |
|
|
Anex |
AG-2016, AG-2017, AG-2019, AG-2020, AG-2024 Digital, AG-2121 Oven, AG-2123 Oven |
Anex has one of the broadest ranges. Some models use a regular basket, while the AG-2121 and AG-2123 are oven-style machines. Their operation should not be treated as identical. |
|
Westpoint |
Mostly uncomplicated basket models. They are worth considering if you would rather use physical controls than work through a long preset menu. |
|
|
Westinghouse |
WKAFGOT01WH 4.5L Digital, WKAFQK5511 Dual Zone Black, WKAFQK5511 Dual Zone White |
The 4.5L model is a normal single-basket fryer. The WKAFQK5511 versions have two independent cooking zones for preparing separate foods together. |
|
Sencor |
Sencor covers several basket sizes. The smaller models suit limited counter space, while the 5L and 6.5L options make more sense for regular family portions. |
|
|
Gaba National |
These basket-style options compete mainly on size, controls and price. Some models may only be available through inquiry, so check the live page before comparing. |
|
|
Decakila |
Compact and regular basket options. The smaller models suit one or two users better than a household trying to cook a full meal in one batch. |
|
|
Homage |
This model uses separate time and temperature knobs. For some users, that is easier than repeatedly tapping a digital panel. |
|
|
Bingo |
The larger basket is useful for wings, fries and frozen snacks, although spreading food loosely still matters more than filling the entire capacity. |
|
|
National Gold |
A touchscreen basket model for buyers comparing digital functions outside the premium price category. |
|
|
E-Lite |
E-Lite currently has one model in this collection. Compare its usable basket dimensions and warranty with similarly priced alternatives. |
|
|
De’Longhi |
This premium hot-air fryer has a different form from the usual deep pull-out basket. Availability may be limited. |
|
|
Alpina |
This is a dual air grill, so its layout is not the same as a normal basket fryer. Alpina’s oil-based deep fryers should not be confused with this model. |
A large basket is not automatically the best purchase. If you normally cook for two people, a compact model will heat a smaller portion without taking over the counter. If you regularly prepare separate foods, a dual-zone machine may save more time than one oversized drawer.
What to Do Before the First Cook
Take out the basket, crisper plate, racks and any accessories packed inside the appliance. New machines sometimes have cardboard or protective plastic hidden below the removable plate, so inspect the drawer rather than checking only the outside.
Look at the cable and plug while you are there. If either appears damaged, do not test the appliance.
Next, wash the removable pieces with warm water, dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. The appliance body should only be wiped with a damp cloth. It should never be placed in water.
Dry the basket before returning it to the machine. Water left around the drawer can turn into steam and make it difficult to tell whether the new-appliance smell is disappearing.
Place the fryer on a level, heat-resistant counter. Leave the rear vent open instead of pushing it against the wall or placing it under a low cabinet. The hot exhaust needs somewhere to go.
Air fryers are high-power cooking appliances. Use a properly fitted wall socket where possible. A cheap extension board shared with a microwave, electric kettle or refrigerator is not a good testing setup. If the plug or socket becomes hot, switch the appliance off.
Should You Run a New Air Fryer Empty?
This is where online advice becomes unnecessarily absolute.
Some people insist that every new air fryer must run empty. Others put food in immediately. The correct answer is written in the model’s manual.
If an empty heating cycle is requested, use the stated temperature and duration. If the manual does not mention one, wash the parts thoroughly and pay attention to the smell during the first use.
Philips has a specific procedure for a noticeable plastic smell. It recommends cooling the appliance, washing the drawer again and then running the empty unit at 200°C with the timer at its maximum setting. You can read the official Philips instructions here.
That advice is useful for Philips owners, but it should not be copied blindly to every Anex, Westpoint, Sencor or Westinghouse model.
A faint warm-plastic smell can happen with a new appliance. A sharp electrical smell, melting cable, sparks or smoke from the body is not part of the normal break-in process.
Your First Batch Should Be Boring
Do not make your first test a whole chicken, a cake or expensive fish fillets. Use something inexpensive and forgiving, such as frozen fries or nuggets.
Put a small amount in the basket. One loose layer is enough. Set the temperature to 180°C and the timer to 10 minutes. At the halfway point, pull out the basket and shake it.
Check the food when the timer ends. If it is still pale, add another two or three minutes. Do not immediately add ten more. Small air-fryer batches can change from pale to overcooked quite quickly.
This test tells you three useful things:
-
How strongly the heating element browns food
-
Whether one side of the basket cooks faster
-
How much time the machine takes to recover after the drawer is opened
Your second batch will already be more accurate.
Does an Air Fryer Need Preheating?
Not every time.
Philips says its listed models do not require preheating. Food can go into the basket before the time and temperature are selected.
Other machines may work differently. The Sencor SFR 6550BK, for example, lists a short preheating period.
Preheating is most useful when you want immediate browning on food such as chicken tikka, steak or roasted vegetables. It makes much less difference when reheating pizza or cooking frozen nuggets.
People searching for “Philips air fryer how to use” often assume a preheat is compulsory because many oven recipes include one. It is not compulsory for the Philips models covered by the manufacturer’s guidance.
One warning matters across brands: never preheat with loose baking paper inside. With no food holding it down, the fan can lift the paper towards the heating coil.
The Basket Can Hold More Than It Can Crisp
This is the reason many first batches come out soft.
A large basket may physically hold a full packet of fries, but that does not mean hot air can reach every piece. Food piled tightly together traps steam. The lower pieces become soft while the exposed pieces brown.
Fries and nuggets can overlap slightly because you can shake them. Chicken pieces, fish fillets and kebabs cook more evenly in a single layer.
For a large amount, two reasonable batches usually produce better food than one overcrowded batch.
This applies to jumbo models as well. Capacity describes space, not guaranteed crispness.
How Much Oil Is Actually Needed?
Oil should go on the food, not into the drawer.
Fresh potatoes, vegetables and homemade kebabs benefit from a light coating. Frozen fries and ready-made nuggets usually contain oil already and may not need any more.
Philips also recommends applying oil directly to fresh ingredients rather than pouring it into the pan.
For foods commonly cooked in Pakistani homes:
-
Brush frozen samosas lightly if they look pale.
-
Coat shami kebabs with a thin layer to stop the outside becoming dry.
-
Let excess tikka marinade drip away before placing the chicken in the basket.
-
Avoid pouring leftover marinade over the food during cooking.
-
Do not add a bowl of oil below the basket.
Wet pakora batter is difficult in a standard air fryer because it can fall through the holes before setting. A thicker coating or breadcrumb crust works better.
Useful Starting Times for Pakistani Foods
Treat these times as a first estimate. A thick chicken piece and a thin one will not finish together just because the same preset was selected.

Do not judge raw chicken only by its colour. The centre should reach 74°C or 165°F. This is also the minimum temperature given in the USDA air-fryer safety guidance.
A small food thermometer is more useful than another collection of presets.
Philips, Anex and Dual-Zone Controls Are Not the Same
A manual Philips or Westpoint model is normally started by setting the temperature and turning the timer. The knobs may look basic, but they give direct control and are easy to adjust while learning.
Digital models use a power button, temperature setting, timer and start button. The food icons are presets, not separate cooking technologies. You can ignore them and enter your own settings.
Anex air fryers need a closer model check. The basket-style Anex AG-2016 is used like a conventional drawer fryer. The Anex AG-2121 and Anex AG-2123 use an oven layout with racks. Food placement and tray rotation matter more in those machines.
On the Westinghouse WKAFQK5511 Dual Zone, each basket has its own setting. If fries need 180°C for 15 minutes and chicken needs 190°C for 22 minutes, program the zones separately and use the finish-together function if required.
Do not assume that changing the left basket automatically updates the right one.
Why Food Comes Out Soft Instead of Crisp
Before blaming the appliance, check the surface of the food.
Wet potatoes, heavy marinades and frost-covered frozen snacks release steam. Dry the surface or shake off loose ice before cooking.
Next, look at the basket. If it is packed tightly, divide the food.
If the portion is reasonable but the underside remains pale, shake or turn it earlier. Hot air reaches exposed surfaces more easily.
Finally, adjust the temperature. If the centre is cooked but the outside needs colour, increase the heat slightly for the last two or three minutes. Extending the same low-temperature cook can dry the centre without improving the crust.
What White Smoke Usually Means
White smoke often comes from fat or old residue in the outer pan. Chicken skin, fatty meat and grease left from an earlier batch are common causes.
Loose breadcrumbs can also be lifted towards the heater. Press breading onto the food and remove excess crumbs before cooking.
If smoke appears, stop the machine and allow it to cool before checking the drawer. Clean away the grease or crumbs rather than continuing and hoping it clears.
Philips lists fat, grease residue and loose breading among the main causes of white smoke.
Steam from moist food is lighter and normally disappears quickly. Dark smoke or an electrical smell requires the appliance to be unplugged.
Foil, Baking Paper and Cooking Dishes
Solid foil or baking paper can block the holes that circulate air. This slows browning and can leave the bottom of the food soft.
Philips generally does not recommend using foil or baking paper in its air fryers. Other brands may permit perforated liners, so the manual remains the deciding source.
If liners are allowed, food must sit on top of the sheet to stop it moving. Never place loose paper in an empty, preheating basket.
Ovenproof metal, ceramic, glass or silicone dishes may be suitable when they fit inside the basket and leave room around the sides. Philips advises placing an approved dish inside the basket, not directly in the empty outer pan.
Cleaning Without Ruining the Basket
Let the appliance cool before washing it. Moving a very hot non-stick basket straight into cold water is unnecessary and makes handling it more difficult.
Remove loose crumbs first. Soak stubborn residue in warm soapy water, then clean it with a soft sponge. A metal fork or steel-wool pad may remove the food, but it can also leave scratches that make the next batch stick.
Wipe the cooking chamber after greasy foods. Old oil near the heating area is one of the reasons an apparently clean machine begins smoking on its next use.
Dishwasher compatibility varies. Even if one brand describes its basket as dishwasher-safe, that does not make every tray and attachment safe for the same treatment. Check the manual. Philips provides similar advice in its air-fryer cleaning guide.
One Rule That Solves Most Air Fryer Problems
Keep the food reasonably dry, do not crowd the basket and check it before the timer finishes.
That is the real beginner method. The printed preset is only a starting point. After two or three batches, you will know whether your machine needs an extra minute, a lower temperature or a more vigorous halfway shake.
If you are still comparing machines, visit the Powerhouse Express air fryer collection. It includes compact basket models, family-size options, digital fryers, dual-zone machines and air fryer ovens from brands available in Pakistan.
